Established in 1992, Traditional Orkney Crafts is a small business producing a range of quality furniture. The range centres around the Orkney Chair, a design unique to the Islands, which reflects the lack of trees in its reliance on straw to form the main part of the chair. We are one of only a few firms, which continues this tradition. In its present form, the chair differs little from its predecessors. The back is made of oat straw, which is cleaned and woven by hand to ensure a firm, comfortable support. Alongside our range of chairs is a large selection of stools. The traditional range includes nests, dining stools and footstools. The design incorporates the seagrass seat found in the chair. An innovative range of stools and tables based on the work of Glasgow designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh has also been developed. There are a variety of different designs and finishes which must be seen to be appreciated. Whilst visitors may be overwhelmed by the size of these products, most are delighted to know that shipping costs can be relatively low. Thus the most unique symbol of the Island's craft heritage is a memory which can easily be delivered to your doorstep, even if it is in the USA |
